    This is the first version of the story "In Yeddo Bay," (entry 66), later drawn in greater detail and included in the posthumous collection DC.

    London originally titled this story "Ghostly Chess Game".

    This tale was undoubtedly inspired by London's reading of Thomas Hood's "The Bridge of Sighs," a poem about a similar suicide, the first line of which is "One more unfortunate." Probably also influenced by the author's reading of Ouida's Signa (1875).
