Jack London Society
THE JACK LONDON SOCIETY, Inc., an international non-profit organization that promotes study of the life and work of Jack London, was founded in 1990 as an author society affiliated with the American Literature Association. It numbers over 200 members and continues to grow each year. Membership is open to anyone interested in London. The Society publishes a biannual magazine, The Call, which features short articles, announcements, news about member activities, book collecting information, photographs, notices of recent publications, reviews, and research notes. It is indexed by the Library of Congress and mailed out in late winter and late summer each year. At the last symposium, Kenneth Brandt, Savannah College of Design, was elected to the Advisory Board. Ken will be taking over editorship of The Call beginning with the Spring-Summer 2006 issue. For more information on submissions, contact him by e-mail. Beginning in 1992, the Society has held a biennial Symposium: in Sonoma, California (1992); the Huntington Library in San Marino, California (1994, 1998); Santa Rosa, California (1996, 2000, 2004), Lihue, Hawaii (2002), and Alaska (2004). The Symposia offer formal papers, workshops, films, and plenary speakers, as well as informal excursions and social events. Speakers include leading London scholars from major universities as well as presentations designed for high school instructors and interested readers. The Symposia are known for their combination of outstanding scholarly presentations and relaxed pace. The 9th Biennial Jack London Society Symposium will be held at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, October 9-12, 2008. The Society is presently reserving rooms and space at the downtown Pasadena landmark, the Westin Hotel, with its luxury services, surrounding gardens, inspiring views, and the nearby restaurants, shops, and entertainment of Old Town. The Symposium registration fee of $150 for each attendee ($75 for retirees and students) includes transportation, a luncheon on the patio at the Huntington, and entrance into all Symposium sessions, including the opening celebration the evening of October 10 on the garden terrace of the Westin Hotel. Proposals are welcome for traditional and non-traditional sessions and presentations. Traditional papers on a three-paper panel are limited to 15 minutes. A/v requests must be made by June 15. Deadline for one-page proposals is June 15, 2008, to be sent with a separate sheet containing complete contact information for all participants, to Jeanne Reesman. Of interest to members, a new journal, Studies in American Naturalism, is being published beginning fall,2006, and a new naturalist author society newsletter is also underway. Both are produced by Keith Newlin of the University of North Carolina-Wilmington. Check here later for details. Jack London Society dues are payable on a calendar basis: $15 students and first-time members; $25 regular; $50 sustaining. Upcoming Meetings The Society offers one or two panels each year at the American Literature Association meetings, which are held on the East and West Coasts in alternate years. The American Literature Association solicits paper and panel proposals for its Symposium on American Literary Naturalism October 5-6, 2007, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Newport Beach, California.
