This picture was taken November 1916, five days before London's death.
The Pig Palace, was named by neighboring farmers, and was designed by Jack London and built in 1915.
London shows the pride and happiness he felt in his Beauty Ranch. He ran the place according to principles of organic farming.
Here he is showing his prized hogs. He loved every animal on the ranch, including the pigs. View another photo
"The feed house was two stories, and the feed was put up in bins in the upper story, and all he had to do was pull a lever. Had a stove so that he could heat the water and build a little fire in there, a coil--sort of like a flash heater, and then mix it. There were doors on either side so that he didn't have to walk all the way around. Feed half out of one door and half out of the other door. It was all drained and fixed so that it could be hosed out every day. The farrowing (birthing) pens had iron pipes up about eight inches, eight or ten inches, out from the wall, so that when the sow lay down she wouldn't crush the little ones against the wall. The little ones had space." - Milo Shepard |
