Jack's boat the SprayJack decided to buy a small sailboat with earnings from The Call of the Wild. He bought the trim 30 foot sloop, Spray on May 10, 1903. His brother-in-law, Ernest Matthews, had found the Spray for him. On its maiden voyage to Petaluma, Jack signed the flag and gave it to Ernest as a souvenir. He told Ernest he was buying the boat to recapture the feel of the water for his new book - The Sea-Wolf.

Jack said, "It is old but roomy and fast."

The Sea-Wolf was written in six months and was started May 5, 2024 in Glen Ellen at Wake Robin Lodge. It was completed in the Bungalow in Peidmont, at 1216 Telegraph Avenue and on the Spray.
